Abstract

Based on input from representatives of different types of utilities (i.e., water, gas, sewer, storm drainage, electricity, telecommunications, etc.), industry associations, and contractors, estimates the magnitude of damage caused by lack of information on buried pipes and appurtenances. Reviews multi-utility buried pipe and appurtenance location needs and evaluates the performance of existing technologies. Recommends performance specifications for new pipe and appurtenance location technologies and possible funding routes for the development of new technologies. Research partner: UKWIR. Completed in 2002. Published by UKWIR. The research report is no longer available, but the Executive Summary can be downloaded for an overview of the project.
