Fiber Optic Monitoring Pilot
Abstract
The project aims to assess the viability of employing fiber optic sensing for real-time instrumentation and monitoring across earthen structures managed by LADWP. Its purpose is to show that incorporating DigitalDam and DigitalAqueduct fiber optic monitoring products into current instrumentation efforts can reduce operational risks through early detection and response to emerging failures. This collaborative effort will enable LADWP, FiberSense (FS), and Dam Safety Services (DSS) to evaluate the technology's effectiveness and its applicability for broader adoption. The project will encompass four sites in Owens Valley and one in Metropolitan Los Angeles. Each of the five sites will be provided with one year of monitoring service upon commissioning of the FS system.
