Back to the Future: Guidance for Adaptive and Scenario Supply Planning Approaches

Being prepared for the future, whether for climate change-related or various unanticipated events, is at the forefront of every utility. While there are many useful resources, it can be difficult to navigate and implement approaches that have the desired results for utilities and their customers. This project aims to (1) identify adaptive and scenario planning processes, frameworks, and indicators for changing conditions; (2) gather information and co-design guidance on monitoring drivers of change (including trigger points), scenario development, useful tools and models, goal setting, and implementation planning; and (3) disseminate guidance for effective stakeholder engagement for sensitive issues. The team for this project includes participation from eight diverse water utilities located in the United States, Canada, and New Zealand.
