Abstract

This research addresses the challenges in phosphorus recovery from water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs), particularly focusing on struvite sequestration and harvesting technologies. Despite the growing adoption of phosphorus recovery technologies, operational issues, such as detrimental struvite production, hinder their full potential. The objective of this study is to develop comprehensive guidelines for the implementation, operation, and maintenance of biosolids-based phosphorus recovery systems (BPRS) using data analysis, reactor testing, crystal modeling, and machine learning. By evaluating full-scale data and combining experimental work, the research aims to create resilient designs and provide practical operational guidance. This project is the first of its kind to develop a unified set of design and operational recommendations, optimizing biosolids-based struvite harvesting to support more efficient and sustainable phosphorus recovery practices.
