Case Study on Barriers and Solutions for Putting Innovation into Practice

Case study details the experience and examines the challenges in pursuing innovation in the water sector. The project sought to identify the real-time barriers to innovation faced by Bath Electric, Gas & Water Systems which serves a small village in south central New York State. The one-million gallon per day wastewater treatment plant required a significant upgrade and advanced nutrient control to meet Chesapeake Bay effluent standards. Concurrent with this upgrade, the facility wanted to “transform its wastewater treatment facility into a water resource recovery hub that is environmentally sound, profitable, and sustainable.” Lessons learned in this study can guide other utilities looking at innovative technology or practices.
