Abstract

The objective of this project was to produce both an applied and fundamental understanding of how to improve sludge dewatering. A literature review was conducted to define the state of the art in terms of conditioning and dewatering of sewage sludges. In addition, an experimental investigation of the relationships between floc structure and water release from sludge was performed, along with. an experimental evaluation of novel techniques for improving sludge dewatering. A key outcome from the experimental investigation was that the biofloc structure influences the residual amount of water in the cake more than the floc or superflocculated structure.
