WRF Technology Scan: Innovative Technologies for Decentralized and Small Systems
Associated Project
Water technology innovation can help address the nation’s pressing drinking water problems related to water quality, quantity, affordability, reliability, and security. Small systems are at a disadvantage due to a lack of resources and economies of scale. This webcast focused on the WRF project, Streamlining Access and Approval of Technology for Small Systems and Private Wells (5147). Attendees heard an overview of the project, presentations from vendors providing technology case studies (listed below), and a facilitated Q&A.
Research partners on this project include the Association of State Drinking Water Administrators, Rural Community Assistance Partnership, University of Massachusetts Amherst, and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Featured Technologies:
Introductory Speaker - Association of State Drinking Water Administrators (ASDWA)
Anthony DeRosa, IT and Special Projects Manager
BioCord – Bishop Water Technologies, Inc.
Christine Gan, Wastewater EIT
BioCord is an effective, low-cost method of reducing nutrients/BOD from wastewater. It uses a specialized substrate and a pressurized, fine-bubble aeration system to create the ideal conditions for beneficial bacteria to grow and thrive. As stable and insulated biofilm layers are formed, the result is a low-energy treatment system that is resistant to high loading rates and low temperatures.
Detain H2O: Detention Basin Retrofit Device – Sustainable Streams
Jim Goodrich, PhD
The low-cost Detain H2O Retrofit Device improves the performance of existing detention basins by prolonging storage times, reducing erosive flows in receiving channels, and improving downstream water quality. Low- to medium-intensity storm events will pass through the throttled retrofit device and optional filter media. A portion of larger flows can be routed through the bypass to maintain flood protection.
Microbubbles Generated by Fluidic Oscillation – Perlemax
Michael Hines, Chief Engineer
The single stage process uses one set of blowers to provide mixing, air scouring, and process oxygen with supplemental concentrated oxygen for higher strength waste. The technology is specifically designed for ease of operation requiring less automation with reduced CapEx and OpEx.
OverWater Direct In-Line Pumping – Industrial Flow Solutions
James Huck, Business Development Manager
The OverWatch™ Direct In-Line Pumping system solves many problems associated with traditional wet wells by lifting influent directly from the inlet to the discharge while detecting and responding to solids. Operation is based on continuous pumping, decreasing backups by lifting influent directly at the entry point without water loading. This eliminates odors and well maintenance.
ROAM – e-sens
Brian Cummings, President and Chief Operating Officer
A handheld water quality analyzer that provides automated testing, calibration, and data collection; delivering fast, accurate, real-time results. The one-touch instrument contains a platform of potentiometric and amperometric arrays that provide analytical-grade testing, combining silicon-based sensors with powerful microfluidics to measure 23 water quality parameters.
SafeGuard H2O: In-Situ Stannous and Tin Dioxide Generator – Aqua Metrology Systems, Ltd. (AMS)
Rick Bacon, Chief Executive Officer
Fully automated, on-demand, in-situ generator of stannous (reducing agent) and tin dioxide (adsorbent), coupled with online monitoring capability. Tin and electricity are the only consumables. Removes As, Cu, Cr(VI), Fe, Pb, and Mn from drinking water and As, Cr(VI), Hg & Se from wastewater; acts as corrosion inhibitor for lead pipes and cooling systems; adsorbs SO2, H2S from industrial emissions.
Sentry – Sentry
Patrick Kiely, Chief Executive Officer
SENTRY is a low-maintenance, biofilm-based sensor platform. It has traditionally been installed in aerobic and anaerobic wastewater treatment systems to monitor the following: influent load/fluctuation, toxic shock, nutrient bioreactor performance, anaerobic digestion performance, real-time BOD or TOC correlations, and effluent compliance.
Supercritical Water Oxidation (SCWO) for Sludge Treatment – 374Water
Doug Hatler, Chief Revenue Officer
AirSCWO™ technology uses supercritical water oxidation (SCWO) to transform complex wastes like PFAS and other forever chemicals to valuable recoverable resources. SCWO is a physical-thermal process that uses water above its critical point (374°C and 221 bar) as a solvent. In these conditions, in the presence of oxygen, any organic molecules are rapidly oxidized and converted to clean water, energy, inert gases, and minerals.
MicroNiche Engineering (MNE) - Microvi Biotech, Inc.
Chris Flannery, Business Development Manager
The MicroNiche™ Engineering (MNE) platform delivers technologies utilizing a biocatalytic approach for intensifying and repositioning water and wastewater treatment at reduced whole life costs. The technology creates the ability to more efficiently exploit applied microbiology to enhance all aspects of wastewater treatment. In the drinking water space, our primary experience is treating nitrate and ammonia removal from groundwater.
