Biological Nutrient Removal Instrumentation & Controls Selection Adventure

Webcast
There is no centralized resource detailing the various biological nutrient removal (BNR) control systems, the commercially available sensors and analyzers, their performance and capabilities, and the associated O&M procedures and costs. The Water Research Foundation (WRF) project 5087, Implementation of Innovative Biological Nutrient Removal Processes through Improvement of Control Systems and Online Analytical Measurement Reliability and Accuracy, was developed to increase understanding of online, instrument-driven BNR control schemes and their reliability and performance.

In this webcast, the co-principal investigators highlighted outcomes of project 5087 and provided the audience with decision support tools to evaluate the applicability of BNR control systems and associated sensors and analyzers at water resource recovery facilities. The project team created a user-friendly, web-based app called the BNR Instrumentation & Controls Selection Adventure, which houses the tools. In addition, the project team developed five pre-loaded BNR control exercises that can be self-completed using an interactive, operations-focused simulator platform. Presenters walked through the web-based app and simulator platform during the webcast.

This webcast targets a wide audience encompassing operators, utility directors, and engineers who are operating or planning to upgrade their BNR system(s). It is intended to be an introduction for those not familiar with BNR control systems and instrumentation options, as well as an opportunity for those with more experience to learn from other’s experiences.
