Review of Non-Culture-Based Methods for Pathogen Monitoring in Potable Reuse
Abstract
This white paper reviews methods that can enhance pathogen control in potable reuse and illustrates the extent to which traditional, new, and upcoming technologies can be used to address existing challenges. The current state-of-the-art in the evaluation of pathogen removal in potable reuse systems is reviewed and critical knowledge gaps are identified with respect to pathogen concentrations and their reduction in the different unit processes used in potable reuse. The white paper includes in-depth discussions on a number of monitoring techniques that have applications in addressing these knowledge gaps, as well as techniques that will have utility for water reuse in the near future and focuses primarily on viruses and protozoa due to the fact that they often drive potable reuse treatment decisions.
