Abstract
This project researched dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) content in the effluent of different wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). It helped determine sources of effluent DON and its characteristics, fractionation based on particle size, and bioavailability. The report provides information and methods that will be useful to WWTP operators looking for ways to reduce effluent DON and to regulators in developing a rationale to set permit limits based on the bioavailable fractions of effluent TN.
