Abstract

Will investigate biofouling of reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF) membranes by (1) characterizing biotic versus abiotic biofouling, (2) developing and applying predictive as well as in situ measurement techniques capable of distinguishing between the two types, and (3) evaluating techniques to minimize membrane biofouling through investigation of various pretreatment options, fouling-resistant membranes, and cleaning approaches.
