Cost-Effective Approaches for Control of Multiple Constituents of Emerging Concern (CECs)
Abstract
This work will identify gaps in current and future regulatory drivers related to constituents of emerging concern (CECs) management. The resulting risk registry and quantitative metrics will help utilities utilize a risk-based strategy to manage CECs. CECs in potable reuse applications can be viewed as “involuntary risk,” which not only lowers the perceived acceptable levels but also shifts the liability of effectively managing CECs on to water authorities. Although treatment technology selection is primarily governed by wastewater resource recovery facilities' need to meet nutrient limits, co-management of CECs in water treated across robust multi-barrier treatment schemes consisting of a combination of physio-chemical and biological processes is an added benefit. Utilities will have a clearer understanding of where to apply management and treatment opportunities for CECs, addressing both removal and cost considerations.
