Developing Guidance for Evaluation and Implementation for Control of HABs in Source Water
Abstract
As cyanobacteria blooms become more prevalent, utilities need improved guidance on early detection programs and source water control strategies. To meet this need, this project reviewed available published information, survey utilities regarding practices, evaluated existing and innovative technologies for monitoring and treatment, and synthesized this information into a guidance document and decision trees utility managers can use to address potential harmful algal bloom events. This project has produced various journal articles: A Critical Review on Operation and Performance of Source Water Control Strategies for Cyanobacterial Blooms: Part I-Chemical Control Methods and Part II-Mechanical and Biological Control Methods; State of Knowledge on Early Warning Tools for Cyanobacteria Detection; Utility Practices and Perspectives on Monitoring and Source Control of Cyanobacterial Blooms; and Benthic Cyanobacteria: A Utility-Centred Field Study.
