Performance and Cost Review of Desalination Plants
Abstract
The successful operation of seawater reverse osmosis (RO) plants depends on the ability of the pretreatment system to consistently produce a high quality filtered water for the RO process. The goal of this project was to develop a knowledge-base to provide water utilities with a set of key criteria for the evaluation of conventional versus membrane-based pretreatment technologies. The researchers collected data from 10 existing seawater reverse osmosis plants to understand impacts of feed water quality and non-water quality related factors on the performance of pretreatment technologies and the downstream RO process. An Excel-based interactive tool was developed to assist water utilities in the selection of various seawater pretreatment systems for seawater reverse osmosis desalination.
