Abstract

This project will measure the short-term and long-term presence and oxidation capacity of ozone nanobubbles (O3- NB) using a variety of analytical methods. O3- NBs are not expected to compete with conventional ozone technologies (i.e. fine bubble diffusion, side stream injection) that achieve disinfection (mg-min/L) due to lower expected exposures with O3-NBs (ug-min/L or ng- min/L) during typical ozone process detention times. Pilot- and full-scale case study sites will examine the scale-up during practical scenarios. The innovation assessment will investigate any synergies that exist when trying to remove PFAS from water using granular activated carbon (GAC). Overall, the study is expected to demonstrate that O3-NBs can persist in drinking water and wastewater and are a potential alternative to chlorine and chloramine or other applications to take advantage of low oxidant exposure over extended periods of time.
