This presentation was given at the AWWA Water Quality Technology Conference and Exposition Conference in Toronto, Canada on November 7, 2012 during the session on “Disinfectants: Impact and Changes in the Distribution System.” The presentation highlights the ongoing WaterRF project, “Monochloramine Cometabolism: The Missing link in Understanding Disinfectant Loss During Nitrification Episodes in Distribution Systems” (project # 4341). It focuses on occurrence of monochloramine cometabolism under drinking water condition, kinetic models to describe monochloramine cometabolism, and the potential significance of monochloramine cometabolism in practice.
