Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS)

Abstract

It has recently been shown that poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) can be released from biosolids in the environment. The biotransformation of precursors present in biosolids can be a controlling factor in both the rate and extent of these releases. However, the extent and rate of PFAS leaching through unsaturated soils following biosolids land application remains poorly understood, as field data quantifying this process are lacking.

The overall goal of this project is to measure the coupled transformation, leaching, and migration of PFAS through the unsaturated zone from land-applied biosolids. This will be achieved through evaluating leachate collected periodically with in-situ lysimeters and soil sampling.
